Nobody says Goodnight

I wait for you like a storm comes to pass
like a farmer smells the air
nodding his head
wrinkled hands hold a mug
Good Dog dots the distance
its bouncing fur
partners with the wheat field

we dance

The past caves in
unsettling the night
my bed takes warmth
from me
I long for a better blanket
and pillows too soft, too big.

The lights take their rest
how quickly they retire
even the blinking fire alarm
has mysteriously gone dark

I reel in sleep
zipping my day up
like a winter coat
and climb in

silently
