safer at home

All changed around us in a blink

we became like squirrels watching from the corners of our eyes

darting

twitching

air tinged with fear

so we exhaled less

suppressed sneezes

six feet apart

held captive by glowing screens

some of us left

while others stretched and grew

many stayed still

plenty shouted

too many grieved

the weight of it all climbed on top of me at times

like a toddler unburdening itself

sticky hands and sweaty arms

not minding boundaries

grubby grabby

choking and pulling

but then there was you

and together we laid in the sun

quiet with birds

studying sparkling waves for clues

finding only peace
